What is Red / Infrared Light Therapy?
Therapeutic laser and LED therapy are types of photobiomodulation (PBM), the stimulation of cells by visible or infrared light that elicits physical and chemical changes, enhancing healing. Laser acupuncture uses class 3b, non-surgical lasers, to stimulate the acupuncture points, treat pain and swelling in local tissue and promote healing. This safe, painless therapy uses red and infrared light in the non-ionizing part of the spectrum ( does not damage cell DNA, unlike UV radiation).
How does it work?
Chromophore molecules in our mitochondria absorb photons and convert the light energy to chemical energy, boosting ATP (adenosine triphosphate, the energy molecule of the cell). The infusion of energy helps injured cells repair and function better. Functional MRI research has found both laser acupuncture and needle acupuncture create similar changes in brain activity.
In my clinic, I offer the following PBM treatments:
Red Light Therapy Body Mat
May benefit multiple body systems to improve fatigue, muscle and joint pain, mood and sleep, even the microbiome. More and more studies are finding benefits of this therapy.
Facial Rejuvenation
FDA approved for wrinkles and hair loss, red light stimulates collagen, melatonin, lymph, reduces inflammation, and increases ATP production, boosting cellular repair.
Laser as an alternative to needles
Laser acupuncture may be used as an alternative to needles in patients who are needle phobic and children. Some conditions I have found respond better to laser combined with acupuncture.
