I came across an article about a claim trending on TikTok that green tea will help you lose weight and burn fat, “Is Green Tea Really Nature’s Ozempic?”
While green tea won’t make you drop pounds drastically like GLP-1 drugs, the tea does help with metabolism of fats and glucose.
Green tea catechin (not the caffeine component) increased energy expenditure associated with brown adipose tissue in humans in this study.
Brown fat makes us feel warm and changes our threshold for shivering in cold temperatures. This is called thermogenesis, which also increases overall metabolism, forcing fat cells to be used as energy.
Brown fat also helps you regulate glucose and insulin, which can help with weight management.
In adults, brown fat surrounds the heart, kidneys, neck, and chest.
Lean people and athletes have more brown fat. Exercise tells the white fat cells to burn like brown fat cells.
Green tea alone may not make you drop those last 10 pounds but it does help burn fat cells and improve metabolism, not to mention its myriad other benefits for inflammation.
