What is it?

Therapeutic laser and LED therapy are types of photobiomodulation, the stimulation of cells by visible or infrared light that elicits physical and chemical changes, enhancing healing.

Laser acupuncture uses class 3b, non-surgical lasers, to stimulate the acupuncture points, treat pain and swelling in local tissue and promote healing. This safe, painless therapy uses infrared light in the non-ionizing part of the spectrum (the type of radiation that does not damage cell DNA).

How does it work?

Chromophore molecules in our cells initiate reactions when subjected to laser and light therapy, leading to the conversion of photons into cellular energy in the form of increased ATP (adenosine triphosphate, the energy molecule of the cell). Injured cells can begin to repair and function normally.

Functional MRI research has found both laser acupuncture and needle acupuncture create similar changes in brain activity.

Who can benefit?

Laser acupuncture may be used as an alternative to needles in some patients or in addition to acupuncture techniques. Since 2004, I have incorporated laser treatment into my practice.

Treatment for: children, needle-phobic patients, musculoskeletal pain/swelling, arthritis, tendonitis, lymphedema, fertility.

LED light therapy increases circulation and enhances well being. I also use LED therapy along with my microneedling sessions, a form of cosmetic acupuncture treatment.

Red LED light therapy, FDA approved for anti-aging and hair loss, stimulates collagen, melatonin, lymph, reduces wrinkles and inflammation, and increases ATP production, boosting cellular repair. Yellow light treats hyperpigmentation, bruising, and broken capillaries. Blue light treats acne.
